BANGKOK – At least four people were killed and 15 students injured in a shooting at a school north of the Thai capital Bangkok today, Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee said.
Those killed in the incident at a secondary school in Nonthaburi province were two students and two teachers, he said.
"The injured students were not hurt by gunfire, but rather while they were trying to flee," Suwunchwee told news site Thai PBS.
The suspect was identified as a student at the school and was reported to have died after the attack, local media said, citing the authorities. Some reports said the suspect was either shot dead by police or took his own life.
Suwunchwee added that the suspect opened fire with a handgun, and that an investigation is under way to determine how he obtained the weapon.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul described the shooting as deeply shocking.
"It is a very horrific incident. It should not have happened. How can this happen in our country?" he told reporters at Government House in Bangkok.
