PETALING JAYA – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained the former chief executive officer (CEO) and former chief financial officer (CFO) of a company owned by a statutory body over suspected abuse of power in the purchase of shares in two plantation companies worth RM370 million.

A source said the two suspects, aged 68 and 60, were detained while giving statements at the MACC headquarters here at about 6.30pm yesterday.

Both were, however, released the same night on health grounds and were scheduled to return to the MACC headquarters at 10am today to continue recording their statements.

“The arrests follow investigations by a special team set up to review and examine the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Tabung Haji, which was made public through the official portal of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) on July 29,” the source said today.

MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman, when contacted, confirmed the detentions.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 for suspected abuse of power.

The RCI report in question was uploaded for public viewing on Jakim’s official portal on July 29 and forms the basis of the special team’s review. No further details have been released on the identities of the plantation companies involved in the RM370 million transaction.
