Carragher: Man United not ready to challenge for EPL title

LONDON – English football pundit Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United are not yet capable of challenging for the English Premier League (EPL) title, describing the new-season race as a two-horse contest between Arsenal and Manchester City.

Carragher said City remain the frontrunners and are capable of reclaiming the EPL crown even though the club is entering a new era after Pep Guardiola was replaced by Enzo Maresca.

"At the moment, I only see Arsenal or City (as champions) even though the transfer window is still open until the end of the month," he said.

"There are questions about Maresca's ability, but based on what he did on the pitch at Chelsea, his tactical approach and how he sets up a team, he can help City reach a higher level."

On United, Carragher said the Red Devils are still not in a position to challenge for the title despite heavy spending in the current transfer window under Michael Carrick.

"United will not win the league. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans may be examples of what are considered smart buys. They are players you would not expect (to represent United) and this is a different approach," he said.

"Previously United seemed to be only about spending money on big names and keeping the fans happy, without thinking about whether the player suited how the team functions."

Carragher also suggested Liverpool are not convincing enough to be placed among the favourites and are expected to struggle under Andoni Iraola. – AGENCIES
