India's Gen Z movement could challenge Modi's BJP if it forms a party

NEW DELHI: The Generation Z movement that led massive protests in India could become a new challenger to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if the Janta Cockroach Party (CJP) enters politics.

Analyst Amitabh Tiwari did not rule out the possibility that the movement could win support if the CJP forms a party, continues championing youth issues and maintains its momentum in pressuring the government.

He said next year's state elections could serve as an early test of Indian youth support, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat, Modi's home state.

"It is unlikely that this issue will have a major impact on the BJP in the state elections, but it may be a more important factor going into 2029," he said, referring to the general election.

Born from an exam paper leak

The CJP drew national attention after its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, led protests over an examination paper leak that began in New Delhi before spreading across the country.

The protests also highlighted young people's concerns over unemployment and job opportunities despite India's rapidly growing economy.

Pressure from the movement eventually contributed to the resignation of India's then education minister, further raising attention on the CJP's influence among the young.

Next steps undecided

Dipke, however, said the CJP has no plans to enter electoral politics in the near future.

He said the movement wants to gather the views of Gen-Z on which issues should be prioritised before deciding its next step.

CJP supporters held a two-day meeting starting Wednesday to discuss the movement's agenda and how to carry their struggle forward.

Dipke did not rule out forming a political party if it secures majority backing, including contesting future elections at the people's request. – AGENCIES
