Commonwealth gold medallist Hafizuddin Roslin named UniMAP sports icon

The 22-year-old weightlifter, who won gold in the 88kg category at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, received his letter of appointment at UniMAP's Kampus Alam in Perlis.

PETALING JAYA – National weightlifter Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin has been appointed Sports Icon of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), adding to the recognition he has received since winning gold at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The appointment makes the 22-year-old an inspiration to students, particularly the university's young athletes, in pursuing excellence at national and international level.

The letter of appointment was presented by UniMAP Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Ts Dr Mohd Mustafa Al Bakri Abdullah during a meeting with Hafizuddin at the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Chancellery, Kampus Alam UniMAP, in Perlis yesterday.

Mohd Mustafa said the appointment was not merely recognition of Hafizuddin's achievement, but part of the university's effort to turn his success into a source of inspiration for the campus community.

"Hafizuddin is the best example of how talent developed continuously with discipline, determination and proper guidance can take an athlete to international level.

"UniMAP hopes his experience, fighting spirit and journey to success can be shared with university athletes so they become more confident, competitive and aspire to excel in sports," he said in a statement today. (Translated from Malay)

He added that UniMAP was committed to strengthening university sports development by providing space and support for talented students to grow into high-performance athletes.

The effort, he said, was in line with the university's aspiration to produce students who excel not only academically but also in co-curricular activities and sports at national and international level.

Hafizuddin described the appointment as a deeply meaningful honour.

"I hope to share my journey and experience with UniMAP athletes so that they continue to believe in their own ability, keep working hard and do not give up easily in chasing their dreams," he said. (Translated from Malay)

Known as the 'Badang of Perlis', Hafizuddin is a native of the state who first made his name through the SEMSIRA Perlis weightlifting arena before moving on to the national and international stage.

At the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, he claimed gold in the 88kg category, cementing his reputation as one of the country's most respected young weightlifters.

He was earlier champion at Sukma Sarawak 2024, where he also broke eight national records.
