15th Kenyir Snakehead Battle draws over 140 anglers to Lake Kenyir
The two-day casting competition doubled as a fish-tagging research exercise with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.
HULU TERENGGANU – More than 140 anglers from Malaysia and Indonesia took part in the 15th edition of the Kenyir Snakehead Battle (KSB), a snakehead casting competition held at Lake Kenyir on July 4 and 5.
The event was organised by the Terengganu Amateur Professional Anglers Association (PPPAT) with full backing from the Central Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah), support the organisers said allowed the competition to run smoothly.
Prizes were contributed by local brands and companies including Tasek Marine, Boatyard Malaysia, EXP, Pok Tam Caster, Ikanz, Extend and Epolcraft, in line with the organisers' aim of raising the profile of homegrown brands.
A distinctive feature of this edition was a collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) to carry out research and tagging of fish to gather data on their movements. All catches were tagged by UMT before being released back into the lake as a conservation measure.
How it ran
Participants gathered at a jetty near the Pulau Poh Bridge, with six houseboats booked by the organisers as accommodation and the main base. Houseboat Arowana served as the secretariat base.
There was no distance limit for fishing grounds, but anglers had to avoid prohibited zones marked out by the authorities. All weighing was done at the secretariat counter using only equipment provided by officials to prevent cheating — an added challenge, as anglers had to keep their fish fresh and alive on the journey back.
Categories included Individual, Team, Special and Smallest Toman, alongside 40 lucky draw prizes of lures, T-shirts, caps and fishing gear.
Results
Mohd Ridzuan of team JCC B won the Individual category with a 6.28kg toman, ahead of Afieqzan (Kimia Angler) and Muhammad Faiz (Glugorianz Angler). Winners took home Haswing electric motors and fishing equipment.
Abdul Alif of Glugorianz Angler won the Smallest Toman category with a 1.040kg fish, while Kamarul of team Sniper won the Special category with a 1.4kg haruan, followed by Najmi Haiqal and Abdul Alif.
In the team category, JCC A dominated with six toman weighing 17.02kg, followed by LaFamilia (six fish, 15.22kg) and JCC B (five fish).
The competition ended at 4pm on the second day, with prizes presented by Ketengah deputy general manager (operations) Mahdi Amin Ahmad.
