BN's winning momentum can carry over to Perlis, says Kangar Umno leader

Kangar Umno division committee member Firdaus Abd Razak says the party's state election wins in Johor and Negeri Sembilan can be repeated in Perlis if it picks the right candidates and keeps up grassroots work.

KANGAR – The winning momentum and resurgence shown by Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the last two state elections can continue in Perlis, allowing the coalition to retake the state in the 16th General Election (GE16), a party grassroots leader said.

However, to realise a "blue wave" in Perlis, the party needs to assess several aspects, particularly the choice of candidates and sustained party work on the ground.

Kangar Umno division committee member Firdaus Abd Razak said candidates fielded must be well-liked by the people and be individuals who have consistently served their areas.

To sustain the momentum of support, he said, programmes and activities that have a direct impact on the people must be carried out continuously.

"Looking at the results of the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, it is not impossible for that winning momentum to continue in Perlis. God willing, the blue wave will also sweep Perlis," he told Utusan Malaysia. (Translated from Malay.)

Two wins in three weeks

BN won the Johor state election on 12 July and repeated the feat three weeks later in Negeri Sembilan, in the state election held on 1 August.

Firdaus said the wins in Johor and Negeri Sembilan — and possibly Melaka after this — showed that Umno and BN were being accepted by the people again.

"However, Umno must always remain humble. God willing, Umno will once again become the party of choice for the people in this country," he said.
