DUNGUN – An outing with friends turned tragic when a 19-year-old student drowned in Sungai Loh, Kampung Jongok Batu, in Hulu Dungun here today.
The 4.40pm incident claimed the life of Ahmad Al Hafiz Asri Ahmad Kamarulzaman, a student of Kolej Ketengah here.
Bandar Al Muktafi Billah Shah Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Kamal Suhaimi Abdullah said Ahmad Al Hafiz Asri, who was pursuing a Diploma in Islamic Tourism Management, had gone to the river for a picnic at 11am.
"The victim is said to have not resurfaced after jumping into the river for a swim. His panicked friends tried to search for him in the river but failed to find him before calling for help from the rescue team," he said.
Kamal Suhaimi said a team of firefighters rushed to the scene and the victim's body was found wedged between rocks about 10 metres from the location of the incident.
The victim was among nine friends who were spending time at the river when the incident occurred.
The case serves as a reminder for the public to exercise caution when engaging in recreational activities at rivers, particularly in deep and rocky stretches.
