KLUANG – A male college student believed to be linked to the death of a baby girl in Taman Seri Suria here has been released after eight days in remand, which began on July 30.

Kluang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said the 19-year-old man would instead be called as a prosecution witness against the female student who gave birth to the infant.

He said that after the investigation papers were submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor, a decision was made to release the male student on condition that he serve as a prosecution witness.

The 19-year-old female student is currently under detention at Hospital Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom (HEBHK) Kluang after giving birth to another child while receiving treatment there. She will be charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

"The charge against the female student will be registered at the Kluang Magistrate's Court tomorrow (Friday)," he said in a statement.

How the case unfolded

On July 29, the male student was arrested at about 1pm after police received a report on a female student who had been admitted to hospital and was believed to have recently given birth.

Further checks at the rented house occupied by the woman led to the discovery of the body of a baby girl, with several stab wounds found on the infant's body.
