JAKARTA – A 22-year-old man allegedly set fire to his family home along Jalan Cirangrang in Bandung, West Java, after being repeatedly scolded by his mother, news agency CNN Indonesia reported.

The incident, which occurred at about 1pm local time yesterday, also destroyed two neighbouring houses after the flames spread rapidly.

Local police chief Kurniawan said preliminary investigations found that the suspect, identified only as AR, acted out of emotion after being scolded by his mother shortly before the incident.

"The main motive is believed to be resentment over being frequently scolded by his parents, especially after the suspect recently divorced his wife," he said, in remarks translated from Indonesian.

According to police, the suspect set fire to a motorcycle parked inside the house. The blaze then spread, destroying the entire structure as well as nearby homes.

No lives were lost, but the suspect's father was reported to have suffered burns to his hands while escaping.

Police who arrived at the scene arrested the suspect and seized the charred motorcycle and two gas lighters as evidence. – AGENCY
