Man denies sexually assaulting 17-year-old girl in Melaka, court refuses bail

MELAKA – An unemployed man was charged at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today with physical sexual assault on a 17-year-old girl last week.
The accused, Mohd Asroy Razali, 38, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him by a court interpreter before Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah.
According to the charge, he intentionally committed physical sexual assault on the teenage girl at a hotel along Jalan Parameswara, Kampung Bandar Hilir, in the Melaka Tengah district, at about 8am on Aug 1.
The charge was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and possible whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Qaiyyum Ramlan, who led the prosecution, proposed bail of RM18,000 with additional conditions that the accused not interfere with prosecution witnesses and report monthly at the nearest police station until the case is disposed of.
The accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for the bail amount to be reduced, saying he had to care for his parents and had recently undergone heart surgery and suffered from a hernia.
After hearing submissions from both sides, the court ruled that no bail would be allowed for the accused.
The case was set for mention again on Sept 8.
