Rayer presses police to explain arrest of two men over podcast

DAP MP Rayer has urged the inspector-general of police and Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to explain the arrest of two men in connection with a podcast.

Although police said the two were detained for allegedly touching on religious sensitivities in the podcast, Rayer asked the authorities to spell out what seditious statements the pair had actually made.

"What is so controversial about their podcast? The public is demanding answers," he said in a statement.

"Making a podcast is not a crime. Political discourse should not be governed by fear of backlash. Their arrest does not reflect the spirit of reform."

He added: "A political discussion, even if controversial, uncomfortable to listen to or containing strongly stated political views — even if considered unpleasant — cannot automatically become a criminal matter that allows police to make arrests."

Yesterday, police said the two men, in their 30s and 60s, were arrested after a report was lodged over a video clip showing them discussing secular and liberal thought.

North Klang police chief Ramsay Embol said they were being investigated on suspicion of sedition, making statements that could cause public fear, and wounding religious feelings.

Updates sought on other cases

Rayer also urged police to provide an update on reports lodged against controversial preacher Ridhuan Tee Abdullah over several Facebook posts alleged to contain racial and provocative remarks.

He further sought an update on the investigation into Jempol MP Shamsulkahar Deli over remarks allegedly linking DAP to an image deemed insulting to the Sultan of Selangor.
