Decade of woes for Klang flat residents as 120 abandoned cars hog parking bays

KLANG – More than 120 abandoned or derelict vehicles at Pangsapuri Seri Perantau here continue to burden residents who have been grappling with a shortage of parking space for the past decade.

Besides taking up parking bays, the immobile vehicles have become mosquito breeding grounds and could potentially harbour venomous animals such as snakes, as well as rats.

Resident Norazman Abd. Wahab, 53, said the apartment complex is home to about 9,000 people across 12 blocks, but has only around 480 parking bays.

He said the situation had become increasingly critical as the number of stranded vehicles kept rising, including those belonging to outsiders who no longer live in the area.

"Most of the damaged vehicles were left behind by family members of residents who have died, but they refuse to sell or dispose of them.

"As a result, parking space is getting more limited, and the area has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and pests," he said when met here today. (Quote translated from Malay.)

The gap between the number of occupants and available parking facilities is seen as the main cause of the congestion at the complex, which has fewer than 500 bays for its 12 residential blocks.
