SURABAYA – Indonesian authorities have arrested another Malaysian within days on suspicion of smuggling methamphetamine and ecstasy pills into the country, an offence that carries the death penalty there.
The 22-year-old man, identified only as DI, was detained in Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city, on Monday shortly after arriving on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, according to airport security task force chief Novi Manunggal in a statement.
Acting on information received, airport officers found methamphetamine and ecstasy pills taped to the suspect's body, the statement said.
Novi said the suspect was found carrying four packages containing 990g of crystal methamphetamine, along with four packets holding 1,089 ecstasy pills.
The suspect has been charged with smuggling drugs exceeding five grams — an offence punishable by death in Indonesia.
Last week, authorities also detained a 39-year-old Malaysian pilot after finding more than 70,000 ecstasy pills in his luggage at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta.
The pilot had just operated a passenger flight from Malaysia, and subsequent tests found him positive for several types of illicit drugs. – AFP
