SHAKAM: National contingent to receive RM1.1 million in medal rewards

SEPANG – Malaysia's contingent, which closed its 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games campaign above target, will receive a total of RM1.1 million under the Malaysian Athletes Victory Reward Scheme (SHAKAM).

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the payout is in recognition of athletes who delivered medals for the country.

Each gold medallist will receive RM80,000, with an additional RM10,000 bonus for athletes who broke a Games record.

"For SHAKAM, we give rewards according to the colour of the medal, which is RM80,000 for gold, and if an athlete breaks a Games record, they receive an additional RM10,000," he said.

"For silver medallists the reward is RM40,000, while bronze medallists receive RM20,000," he told reporters while welcoming the contingent home at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today. (Quotes translated from Malay.)

Higher rates under study

Taufiq said the government is also studying a proposal to raise SHAKAM rates in the future through cooperation with various parties, to further strengthen athlete welfare.

"At the National Sports Council level, we are discussing the proposal to increase SHAKAM rates and of course it requires scrutiny and support not only from the government but also the corporate sector," he said.

"Overall, RM1.1 million in SHAKAM will be channelled to athletes who delivered eight golds, three silvers and five bronzes in Glasgow."

The contingent's performance not only lifted the image of Malaysian sport but is now being followed by financial recognition for the athletes involved.
