In the 10.20pm incident, lorry driver Abdul Wahid Ismail, 54, and his wife Fauziah Muda, 52, sustained minor injuries to their hands.
Kemaman district police chief Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli said the couple were on their way home to Kampung Pasir Gajah from Cheneh when the crash happened.
"Initial investigations found that the accident occurred when Abdul Wahid, who was driving a Toyota Estima, was startled by the appearance of a herd of elephants in the middle of the expressway.

Meanwhile, Cheneh Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Zubaderi Zahari said a team of eight firefighters rushed to the scene upon receiving information about the crash.
