KUALA TERENGGANU – The Terengganu contingent is targeting 61 gold medals at the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor, which begin on Aug 15, as it seeks to reclaim the overall championship title.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the target was believed to be achievable based on the athletes' form and the detailed preparations carried out by the Terengganu State Sports Council (MSNT) over the past two years.

He said several sports, including cycling, were expected to be the main contributors of gold medals for the state.

"At the 21st Sukma in Sarawak in 2024, Terengganu finished only fifth overall after collecting 41 golds, 36 silvers and 47 bronzes.

"That result should serve as motivation for the athletes to rise and produce better results this time," he said in a speech text delivered by State Secretary Datuk Mohd Azmi Mohamad Daham here.

Ahmad Samsuri was optimistic that a target of 60 to 65 golds could be achieved by the contingent, which will compete in 35 of the 37 sports on offer.

Medal incentives

He also said the state government was providing incentives of RM3,500 for every gold medal, RM2,500 for silver and RM1,500 for bronze.

"The same incentives are also offered to athletes at the Para Sukma in Selangor, which will take place from Sept 5 to 10," he said.
