KLANG – Tanjung Harapan beach in Port Klang is being further promoted as a fishing tourism hub through the Selangor Surfcasting Challenge 2026, which offers a total cash prize pool of RM17,400 this Sunday.

Organised by the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) together with Kail Kota Events and supported by Tourism Malaysia, the competition is scheduled to run from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

MBDK councillor Lee Fu Haw said the competition, now in its second edition, served as the best platform to introduce Tanjung Harapan as a recreation- and fishing-based tourism destination.

He said the location offers attractive views of the Strait of Malacca, increasingly complete public amenities and is well known as a fishing spot for various fish species.

"Tanjung Harapan has huge potential as a fishing hub and a community recreation centre. This programme can boost tourism as well as the economy of local entrepreneurs," he said.

He added that the coastal area is a natural habitat for species such as threadfin (senangin), mayong, catfish (semilang), tebal pipi, croaker (gelama), queenfish (talang), duri and ketuka.

The success of the previous edition, he said, saw Rostam Ibrahim, 50, from Pekan, Pahang emerge champion after landing a 2.285kg threadfin using live prawn bait — proof of Tanjung Harapan's potential as one of the best surfcasting locations in Selangor.

Prizes and entry

For this edition, the champion will take home RM7,000, followed by RM1,000 for the runner-up, RM500 for third place and RM300 for fourth, while winners placed fifth to 90th will each receive RM100.

Klang Royal City Council Mayor Dato' Haji Abd. Hamid Bin Hussain is expected to officiate the closing ceremony and present the prizes to the winners.

The entry fee is RM70 for one rod (two hooks), and the first 200 participants will receive a free exclusive T-shirt, besides standing a chance to win various lucky draw prizes.

Early registration opens on Aug 8 from 3pm to 7pm and continues on Aug 9 from 6.30am to 10am at the organiser's tent.
