The victims were identified as Chiu Teck Siong, 40; Mohamad Nur Hafiz Ibrahim, 29; and Muhammad Raimi Ismarubee, 26.
Sabah police commissioner Jauteh Dikun said initial investigations found that the three had gone to pluck coconuts before the incident.
"While using the long metal pole, the tool is believed to have lost balance and touched the electrical cable.
"Two other personnel tried to help their colleague, but were also electrocuted," he was quoted as saying in the report.
He said police had opened an investigation paper to determine the actual cause of the incident.
Post-mortems will be carried out before the bodies are handed over to the next of kin.
