PETALING JAYA – Malaysia's airport security system needs immediate improvement following enforcement weaknesses that were allegedly flagged repeatedly in the past but never properly addressed.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, in a Facebook post today, said he had sternly rebuked the enforcement failures during a meeting with the relevant agencies yesterday.
He said the meeting involved senior officers from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the Aviation Security Division (AVSEC), the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) district police chief.
"I sternly rebuked the enforcement failures that have arisen and urged the agencies concerned to stop merely discussing matters, and instead begin implementing corrective measures without further delay," he said.
Protocols must be reviewed
Tiong said airport security protocols must be reassessed urgently, border screening procedures tightened and coordination among enforcement agencies strengthened to close existing gaps.
"Airports are the country's gateway and give many international visitors their first impression of Malaysia. When protective measures fail to function, the impact goes far beyond a single incident.
"Such failures undermine Malaysia's credibility as a safe and trusted destination. Airport security must therefore evolve alongside new threats and cannot remain bound to outdated assumptions," he said.
Pilot drug case raises questions
Tiong said the latest case involving a Malaysian pilot suspected of involvement in drug trafficking raised serious questions, particularly as the suspect was reported to have tested positive for drugs.
"Pilots do not merely carry passengers. They carry lives. Public confidence is built on the trust that those entrusted with such responsibility are subject to strict oversight, uncompromising standards and continuous monitoring," he said.
He said hiring standards, background screening, operational supervision, monitoring of high-risk positions and professional ethics must be examined more closely to preserve the integrity of the entire system.
Tiong also criticised certain politicians, including Malaysian Airline Pilots Association (MAPA) president Abdul Manan, whom he alleged had chosen to focus on politically blaming certain parties rather than pressing for a comprehensive review of systemic weaknesses.
"Demanding that a minister answer every question may generate headlines, but it does nothing to strengthen airport security or prevent the same incidents from recurring," he said.
