UUM rolls out CSR programme to help SMK Pedu students
Universiti Utara Malaysia's corporate communications team upgraded a school recording studio and ran media workshops at SMK Pedu, Kuala Nerang, Kedah.

KUALA NERANG – The Corporate Communications Department (JKK) of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) recently carried out its Jalinan Mesra Programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pedu here as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts.
The programme brought together UUM staff, the school and strategic partner E-Idaman Sdn. Bhd. in a gotong-royong spirit to brighten up the school environment, including repainting the recording studio that will serve as a platform for students to develop their talents in creative content production, broadcasting and communication.
UUM JKK director Bakhari Che Mohamed Ariff said the programme aimed to transform the school's recording studio and equip students with communication and digital media skills relevant to today's needs.
He said the university's presence at SMK Pedu was not merely an official visit but a manifestation of the responsibility of higher learning institutions to help develop society through the transfer of knowledge, skills and expertise.
"UUM is not just an institution that produces quality graduates, but also a community partner that is always ready to lend a hand, guide and empower society.
"This programme is not just about beautifying the school's physical facilities, but more importantly about opening space for students to explore their potential through skills that can boost their confidence and competitiveness in the future," he said while officiating the programme.
Citing the learning by doing concept promoted by educationist John Dewey, he said the most effective learning takes place when knowledge is translated into real experience and practice.
Students took part in media skills workshops run by JKK UUM officers, including a Canva workshop on creative graphic design, a photography workshop to sharpen visual skills, and a news writing workshop covering ethical communication and information delivery.
Bakhari thanked the SMK Pedu management, the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), E-Idaman Sdn. Bhd. and all volunteers, expressing hope that the collaboration would lead to more community development initiatives.
SMK Pedu principal Nasriah Abu Bakar described the programme as a meaningful initiative in strengthening ties between educational institutions and the community.
"We hope this cooperation can continue for the benefit of the school and the community," she said.
Form Four student Nur Affrina Ahmad Muzznizary said the workshop gave her the chance to keep writing news, whether for social media or school reports.
"I learnt a lot. Previously I just wrote without knowing the basics," she said.
